The job for life model is dead. Here’s what millennials need to know

Job seekers walk towards a job fair held for fresh graduates in Tokyo, Japan, March 20, 2016.

Written by
Jonas PrisingChairman and CEO, ManpowerGroup

weforum – Much has been written recently about technology, digitization and robots replacing jobs – some go so far as to say the end is near for many workers. But as I think of what each of us could accomplish with enhanced technology at our fingertips, based on the early benefits we’re already seeing, I’m an optimist. In this period of transition, or upheaval for some, the question is how we can help individuals and organizations quickly adapt to a changing labour market and upskill to new ways of working. It’s a race we can foresee and must win, for the benefit of all. Tiếp tục đọc “The job for life model is dead. Here’s what millennials need to know”

ipsnews – MANILA, Jun 25 2016 (IPS) – Farming and agriculture may not seem cool to young people, but if they can learn the thrill of nurturing plants to produce food, and are provided with their favorite apps and communications software on agriculture, food insecurity will not be an issue, food and agriculture experts said during the Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s Food Security Forum from June 22 to 24 at the ADB headquarters here. Cogeneration & Trigeneration – How to Produce Energy Efficiently

A practical Guide for Experts in Emerging and Developing Economies
Energy efficiency is an increasingly important contributor to climate change mitigation while at the same time reducing the cost of energy as well as presenting an opportunity for technological innovation. Cogeneration (or ‘cogen’ for short) is in many cases one of the low hanging fruits of energy efficiency, and also has benefits on the electricity supply side. Cogeneration – the combined production of heat and power (also known as CHP) – encompasses all concepts and technologies by which heat and power are jointly generated in one unit and used by the same consumer, with the option of excess energy being fed into the public grid. The high levels of efficiency achieved in this process result from using waste heat as a co-product of electricity generation. Taking this one step further to include the generation of cooling energy from waste heat is called trigeneration (or ‘trigen’ for short) or combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP).

Energy and Air Pollution 2016 – World Energy Outlook Special Report

World Energy Outlook: Released on 27 June 2016

Full reportAcknowledgements | Table of Contents

Executive Summaries
Chinese | English | French

‌‌• Around 6.5 million premature deaths each year can be attributed to air pollution
• Energy production and use are by far the largest man-made sources of air pollutants
• Technologies to tackle air pollution are well known

Clean air is vital for good health. Yet despite growing recognition of this imperative, the problem of air pollution is far from solved in many countries, and the global health impacts risk intensifying in the decades to come.

The scale of the public health crisis caused by air pollution and the importance of the energy sector to its resolution are the reasons why the IEA is focusing on this critical topic for the first time.

Based on new data for pollutant emissions in 2015 and projections to 2040, this special report, the latest in the World Energy Outlook series, provides a global outlook for energy and air pollution as well as detailed profiles of key countries and regions: the United States, Mexico, the European Union, China, India, Southeast Asia and Africa.

In a Clean Air Scenario, the report proposes a pragmatic and attainable strategy to reconcile the world’s energy requirements with its need for cleaner air. Alongside the multiple benefits to human health, this strategy shows that resolving the world’s air pollution problem can go hand-in-hand with progress towards other environmental and development goals.

A strong ASEAN+3 should embrace the IMF

9 May 2016
Author: Ramon Pacheco Pardo, King’s College Londoneastasiaforum – ASEAN+3 (the ASEAN members plus China, South Korea and Japan) was born from the ashes of the Asian financial crisis and the IMF’s response to it. It’s no secret that displeasure — if not hostility — to the policy prescriptions suggested by the Washington-based institution was a key driver behind ASEAN+3. When the global financial crisis spurred the development of the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralisation (CMIM) and the launch of the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), it seemed that ASEAN+3 was finally setting up the structures to free itself from any future dependence on the IMF.But even as the ASEAN+3 grouping’s finance ministers and central bank governors gathered in Frankfurt for their 19th meeting a few days ago, it has become clear that ASEAN+3 needs to embrace the IMF if it is to transform into an essential feature of regional governance in East Asia. A strong ASEAN+3 should not be afraid to do so. Tiếp tục đọc “A strong ASEAN+3 should embrace the IMF”

What consumers want in GM food labeling is simpler than you think

June 24, 2016 3.42pm BST

The fast-approaching July 1, 2016, deadline for Vermont’s new labeling law – and a new federal proposal that would set a national system for disclosure – for genetically modified (GM) food has provoked a range of responses from food manufacturers while reigniting debate about the need to balance the weight of scientific evidence against consumer demand for transparency. At the center of the debate lay questions of trust in science and how the ways we communicate risk serve to increase or decrease that trust. Plan to Fabricate a Genome Raises Questions on Designer Humans

What will scientists do with $100 million to mass-produce genes in the lab?

technologyreview – A proposal by a group of scientists and businesspeople to synthesize a human genome from scratch is attracting sharp criticism for dodging the big ethical questions such a step raises.

The proposal, described today in a two-and-a-half-page letter being published in Science, is to string together synthetically made DNA and shape from it a human genome able to power a cell in a dish, according to lead authors Jef Boeke of New York University’s Langone Medical Center and biotechnologist George Church of Harvard Medical School. New guidance on how to include human rights defenders in National Action Plans on business & human rights

For human rights defenders to be able to safely work on business and human rights issues, both States and businesses must contribute to a safe and enabling environment for such work, whilst desisting from and sanctioning any actions that might restrict or threaten that environment. NAPs provide an important vehicle for the articulation and coordination of the law, policies, and actions required to foster and protect such an environment.

…..

The Guiding Principles reinforce the State duty to protect by articulating how existing
international law should be applied in the realm of business and human rights. According to Principle 1, “States must protect against human rights abuse within their territory and
/or jurisdiction by third parties, including business enterprises. Given the increasing
prevalence of private corporations involved in violations against human rights defenders, it is thus crucial that States use NAPs to adopt laws and policies that enforce their specific
obligations to protect the rights of defenders
.
The Declaration does not establish special rights for defenders but rather acknowledges that the roledefenders play, and the risks they face, require specific legislative and policy responses byStates to ensure that they can work in an environment where their rights are protected.

Shin Woong-Jae A prototype axion detector in Daejeon, South Korea.

nature – Behind the doors of a drab brick building in Daejeon, South Korea, a major experiment is slowly taking shape. Much of the first-floor lab space is under construction, and one glass door, taped shut, leads directly to a pit in the ground. But at the end of the hall, in a pristine lab, sits a gleaming cylindrical apparatus of copper and gold. It’s a prototype of a device that might one day answer a major mystery about the Universe by detecting a particle called the axion — a possible component of dark matter.
