Which is safer, Vietnam or Thailand?

If you look at risks such as violence, Vietnam is much safer than Thailand.

For example, the crime rate for murder is half that of Thailand in Vietnam.

Bangkok is the centre of human trafficking in Asia.

According to The Economist’s latest Global City Safety Index 2019, Thailand’s capital Bangkok scores below the global average of 60 capitals for “personal safety” including crime and murder, and even below Johannesburg in South Africa, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Mexico City, countries known for their high rates of violent crime.

In 2014, following a case of rape and murder of a female foreign tourist, then Thai Prime Minister Prawit made a very infamous statement.

“Those foreign female tourists think Thailand is beautiful and safe, so they think they can do anything and show off in their bikinis everywhere. How can you be safe in a bikini? Unless they are ugly.”

Prayuth has two daughters of his own. But as Prime Minister, he feels that women must wrap up tight to be safe, and that being sexually assaulted means dressing too revealingly and not thinking about how you should behave.

“Women should be like toffee, if you don’t want to be eaten, don’t mess up the candy paper,” Pratt said.

The comments later caused an uproar in the world’s media and although Prayuth later came out and apologised for his comments, his words truly reflected the view of men in mainstream Thai society that female tourists were to blame for wearing revealing clothing.

A statement from the British Foreign Office warning tourists reads.” Drugging drinks is a common occurrence in almost all tourist destinations throughout Thailand, and both women and men can be its victims. Be extra careful with drinks offered by strangers at parties or bars and don’t turn away from your glass, especially at full moon parties on Koh Samui, Pattaya and Koh Phraan where drugged rape after a date is common.

Thailand is one of the most dangerous countries in the world in terms of road traffic, with an estimated 24,000 traffic deaths per year, 73% of which occur on motorbikes. (According to a BBC report)

Vietnam has shown signs of deteriorating law and order in recent years, but crime is generally focused on fraud, robbery with motorcyclists, and theft

Compared to Thailand, which is prone to homicide and rape crimes, Vietnam is better off than Thailand.
