Vietnam to scrap death penalty for 5 felonies under amended Penal Code

The amended 2015 Penal Code of Vietnam, which will take effect at the start of 2018, will no longer impose the death penalty on those found guilty of five felonies.

The code is an amened version of the country’s 2015 Penal Code that has been in place since July 2016.

According to the amended code, five felonies including robbery, manufacturing and trading of fake food and medicine, destroying facilities crucial to national security, surrendering to the enemy, and disobeying orders of commanding officers will no longer be subject to the death penalty. Commenting on draft amendments to the 2015 Penal Code, they said the lack of details could let some criminals go scot-free.

HÀ NỘI — The Surpreme People’s Procuracy, the nation’s premier prosecuting agency, has requested changes in the Penal Code to facilitate investigations into and legal proceedings against child sex abuse suspects.

The request was made yesterday at a meeting of the National Assembly’s Justice Committee and the Committee for Culture, Education, Youth, Adolescents and Children in Hà Nội.

The family of the Vietnamese fisherman who was shot dead by the Thai coast guard force ten days ago can sue the attackers to demand compensation, a local lawyer has said.

Lawyer Ha Hai, from the Ho Chi Minh City Bar Association, offered the suggestion while referring to a Thai police boat – the ship Thai Police 528 – opening fire on six Vietnamese fishing ships while they were operating in the waters off the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang on September 11.
