Skills and occupational needs in renewable energy and Green Buildings – Kỹ năng và nghề nghiệp cần thiết trong ngành năng lượng tái tạo và công trình xanh

The renewable energy sector is growing fast: about half of the new electricity-generating capacity added globally in 2008 and 2009 came from renewable energy additions. Fast deployment has led to skill shortages in technical occupations such as solar installers and electrical engineers, but also in more general occupations, such as sales and finance specialists, inspectors, auditors and lawyers.
This report brings together the findings from 33 countries and arises from a joint EC/ILO project on Knowledge sharing in early identification of skill needs.

Demand for workers in retrofitting and new green construction is expected to grow over the coming years but the lack of appropriate skills in the workforce can hamper the development of the sector and its potential benefits. New skill needs related to energy efficiency, water management and renewable energies in buildings are emerging. Skills-led strategies can drive the green building sector forward.

HO CHI MINH CITY — Vietnam’s TTC Group is planning to sink about $1 billion into solar energy projects in a country still dependent on coal-fired thermal and hydro power for its power needs, with national electricity demand growing faster than 10% annually.

TTC Group, a sugar, energy and real estate conglomerate, said it plans to build as many as 20 solar parks with a total capacity of 1,000 megawatts by next year. The group executed a number of clean energy projects using sugarcane waste before moving into the solar sector Tiếp tục đọc “Vietnam’s solar energy push draws investors”

Following the revised national electricity development plan by 2020, electricity generated from coal-fired thermal power plants still accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the country’s total power, while electricity generated from wind and solar sources only makes up 1-2 per cent. Why is this? Tiếp tục đọc “Vietnam needs to develop renewable energy”

Prof. Tu Trung Chan turns sand into solar energy

Last update 07:15 | 03/08/2017

VietNamNet Bridge – For 15 years, a Vietnamese scientist has been devoted to the work of using sand to produce solar energy with polycrystalline technology, which absorbs light and turns it into power even on dark days.

Letters from the Mekong: Mekong Power Shift – Emerging Trends in the GMS Power Sector

Report

This issue brief, the fourth in Stimson’s “Letters from the Mekong” series, explores the shifting terrain for power sector development in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), analyzing hydropower within the context of a broader range of emerging factors and opportunities that could lead to a transformation in the way that Mekong countries approach energy security, regional electricity trade, and sustainable development. This transition, if effectively implemented, could lead to substantive economic gains and significantly reduce ecological, socioeconomic, and political risks in the Mekong Basin. Renewables 2017 Global Status Report

Renewables 2017 Global Status Report
Launched today  – 7 June

Another Record Breaking Year for Renewable Energy:  More renewable energy capacity for less money

Additions in installed renewable power capacity set new records in 2016, with 161 gigawatts (GW) installed, increasing total global capacity by almost 9% over 2015, to nearly 2,017 GW. Solar PV accounted for around 47% of the capacity added, followed by wind power at 34% and hydropower at 15.5%.

Renewables are becoming the least cost option. Recent deals in Denmark, Egypt, India, Mexico, Peru and the United Arab Emirates saw renewable electricity being delivered at USD 0.05 per kilowatt-hour or less. This is well below equivalent costs for fossil fuel and nuclear generating capacity in each of these countries. Winners of two recent auctions for offshore wind in Germany have done so relying only on the wholesale price of power without the need for government support, demonstrating that renewables can be the least cost option.

Canary in the coal mine Lacklustre power demand in Asia throws a cloud over coal

A surge in renewable energy is another threat to the black stuff’s future

economist_THE Hazelwood power station in Australia’s state of Victoria started generating electricity 52 years ago. The stark symbol of an era when coal was king, Hazelwood was one of Australia’s dirtiest: its fuel was the Latrobe valley’s brown coal, a bigger polluter than the black sort. The station was due finally to close on March 31st. Days earlier, chimney stacks were demolished at Munmorah, a black-coal station north of Sydney, already closed. Australia has shut ten coal-fired power stations over the past seven years, yet coal still generates about three-quarters of its electricity.
