Au Vietnam, la course d’éléphants d’un festival populaire suscite la controverse

Le mahout Y Hoi Bya est assis au sommet de son éléphant et use de son long bâton pour le faire courir jusqu’à la ligne d’arrivée de la course du festival Buon Don sur les hauts plateaux du centre du Vietnam.

Les locaux voient la course comme une célébration de ces animaux vénérés – traditionnellement considérés comme des membres de la famille dans cette région du Vietnam – mais les défenseurs des animaux appellent à mettre fin au festival jugé cruel et d’un autre temps.

Normalement organisé tous les deux ans, le festival de l’éléphant de Buon Don – un évènement touristique majeur – présente des matchs de football, des séances de natation, une parade et un buffet pour les animaux, couronnés par une course très attendue qui se tient les deux derniers jours du festival. VietNamNet Bridge – Together with Dak Lak and Dong Nai, Nghe An is one of three localities in Vietnam with the highest wild elephant populations. However, their natural habitat is shrinking.

There are 13-15 wild elephants in Nghe An

A survey found that there are 13-15 wild elephants in Nghe An, including 11-13 living in Pu Mat National Park. There are two groups of elephants, one in Khe Thoi in the national park’s core area, and another in the buffer zone.

Shrinking and degrading wild elephant habitats in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak have led to a shortage of food and more conflicts between wild and domestic animals, according to Director of the Dak Lak Elephant Conservation Centre Huynh Trung Luan.

The locality has witnessed five conflicts between wild and domestic elephants since March. The wild animals, in group of six to seven, have reportedly been approaching forest ranger stations and residential areas to search for food and attack domestic ones. Conservation must be higher up on the political agenda
