SINGAPORE: The member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) signed multiple initiatives to strengthen transport between states at the close of the 23rd ASEAN Transport Ministers Meeting on Friday (Oct 13).

These included initiatives to liberalise air services in the region, improve the safety and efficiency of air travel and to facilitate the “seamless cross-border movement” of passengers, Singapore’s Ministry of Transport said in a media release.

TOKYO — ASEAN needs to more than double its power capacity in less than 20 years to meet burgeoning demand. British energy research and consultancy group Wood Mackenzie reported last week that the region requires $500 billion worth of investment to achieve such a goal.

HANOI: Vietnam’s most powerful leader has called for greater unity among Southeast Asian states at a time the country has appeared increasingly isolated in challenging China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The exhibition is being held to honor the bloc’s upcoming 50th birthday.

Hundreds of stunning photos featuring ASEAN countries and their people will be on public exhibit on Hanoi’s downtown walking street starting this weekend.

MANILA — In the context of growing rivalries between major world powers, ASEAN needs to demonstrate strong political will and unity to promote peace, security and prosperity, foreign policy experts said on Friday.

They were speaking at a panel discussion at the inaugural ASEAN Media Forum in Manila, ahead of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum.

ASEAN was forged as a mechanism for managing collective security, and the grouping’s role had worked very well for a while, until it began to de-stabilise in 2010, said Michael Vatikiotis, the Asian Regional Director of the Centre for Human Dialogue.

“It was around this time that the two largest powers in Asia, the US and China started sparring more openly,” he said, citing China’s direct investment, support for strategic infrastructure development and military co-operation and the US’s “pivot” to Asia. April 22 marks Earth Day around the globe. I was in 8th grade when Earth Day was first commemorated in 1970, and to mark the day, I participated in annual trash clean-up events at my school. At that time, my world was pretty much the town where I grew up in New Jersey and I didn’t think very much about the rest of the world, I just wanted my neighborhood to be clean. But eight years later, my world expanded when I went to live and work in Bangkok. I vividly remember being struck by the amount of plastic bags, bottles, and wrapping on the streets and in the city’s once-many canals. Now, after four decades of traveling in Southeast Asia, I have witnessed the plague of the plastic bag across pretty much every major city in the region.

Australia urges South China Sea ruling as basis for ‘code of conduct’

MANILA: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations should use an international court’s rejection of China’s claims to almost all the South China Sea as basis for a code of conduct, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on Thursday.

Australia did not take sides in the South China Sea disputes, Bishop said, but it wanted to see “de-escalation of tension”, reiterating its opposition to China’s militarisation of man-made islands in the waters.
