Vietnam says it is ready to hold discussions with the Philippines regarding Manila’s claims to an extended continental shelf in the South China Sea. Philippine assertions overlap with those from China and Vietnam. While clashes between Beijing and Manila have been high profile and sometimes violent, the Philippines and Vietnam have relied on diplomacy to settle their dispute. Buena Bernal reports.

MANILA – Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has not only revitalized defense ties with traditional Western allies but has also doubled down on strategic cooperation with like-minded regional states pushing back against China’s South China Sea assertiveness.
In particular, Vietnam has emerged as a pivotal player in the Philippines’ emerging regional strategy to constrain and roll back China’s ambitions in the hotly contested and geostrategically crucial maritime area.

Việt Nam và Philippines tổ chức giao lưu thường kỳ về nhân sự, chuyên môn, văn nghệ và thể thao tại các điểm đóng quân ở Trường Sa. Chỉ những đối tác chiến lược, có lòng tin và trách nhiệm mới thực hiện được những việc như thế.
Trong khi Việt Nam tuyên bố chủ quyền đối với quần đảo Hoàng Sa và Trường Sa, Philippines yêu sách một phần quần đảo Trường Sa (cụm đảo Kalayaan theo tiếng Philippines). Theo luật quốc tế, chủ quyền đối với mỗi thực thể dẫn đến các quyền chủ quyền và quyền tài phán đối với vùng nước xung quanh.
Từ góc độ đó, Việt Nam và Philippines có tranh chấp chủ quyền và quyền chủ quyền đối với một số thực thể ở quần đảo Trường Sa và các vùng nước xung quanh. Khả năng quản lý các tranh chấp này không chỉ liên quan đến chủ quyền và an ninh của mỗi nước mà còn góp phần vào hoà bình và ổn định trong khu vực.

The Philippines on Wednesday condemned the “cowardly action” of a suspected Chinese fishing vessel accused of abandoning a Filipino fishing crew after a collision in the East Vietnam Sea, while thanking a Vietnamese ship for coming to the fishermen’s aid.
The Chinese ship on Sunday hit a Filipino craft anchored near Reed Bank causing it to sink and leaving 22 crewmen “to the mercy of the elements,” Philippine defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana was quoted by AFP as saying in a statement on Wednesday.
