Taiwan is one of those flash points that has never flashed. The dispute over the island’s fate has had the potential to erupt into conflict between China and the United States for decades. But the feared Chinese invasion has never come. The situation has remained deadlocked for so long that Taiwan’s quandary often drifts into the background of Asian affairs, overshadowed by seemingly more-pressing concerns, such as North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and inflamed tensions between India and Pakistan in Kashmir.

The year is not over, but it’s safe to say that 2020 has been a watershed. Even so, it may be difficult to grasp just how consequential the last several months have been for U.S.-China relations. As the many crises of 2020 recede into the past, it will become increasingly clear that we witnessed the most important sea change in U.S.-China relations in 50 years. Critically, this was the year that the tide of public opinion in the United States turned against China.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is meeting his counterparts from Australia, India and Japan in Tokyo to discuss how to counter China.

The “Quad meeting” comes as all four countries seek to form a front against an increasingly assertive China.

Before he left the US, Mr Pompeo said the meeting was “something we’ve been working on for a long time”.

ROME (AP) — The U.S. and the Vatican butted heads over China on Thursday as the Holy See chafed at U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s public call to take a harsher stance against Chinese restrictions on religious freedom.

Ngày 29/6, Tòa án Evry của Pháp đã ra một thông báo mới về vụ kiện của bà Trần Tố Nga, theo đó quá trình tiến hành các phiên thủ tục sẽ kết thúc vào ngày 28/9/2020 và ngày 12/10/2020 sẽ tiến hành phiên tranh tụng để xét xử vụ kiện.

Như mọi người đã biết, ngày 14/5/2014, bà Trần Tố Nga, một Việt kiều sống ở Pháp từ năm 1993 đến nay, đệ đơn lên Tòa Đại hình ở Evry kiện 26 công ty hóa chất của Mỹ đã cung cấp chất độc hóa học cho quân đội Mỹ sử dụng trong chiến tranh ở Việt Nam, làm cho bà bị nhiễm độc, bị nhiều căn bệnh nguy hiểm, làm cho con gái đầu của bà bị di nhiễm nên đã chết lúc 17 tháng tuổi, con gái thứ hai bị bệnh Alpha Thalassemia (thiếu máu huyết tán). TTCT – Iran vừa hành quyết lực sĩ bộ môn đô vật Navid Afkari về tội đâm chết từ sau lưng một bảo vệ công ty nước là Hassan Torkaman. Gia đình của Torkaman đã từ chối không tha thứ Afkari theo luật Hồi. Luật này cho phép gia đình nạn nhân tha chết cho thủ phạm sau khi nhận hay không nhận bồi thường (còn gọi là luật “tiền máu”). Hai anh em của Navid mang tội đồng phạm thì lãnh 54 và 27 năm tù.

Tuy hành nghề công nhân xây dựng ở Shiraz nhưng Navid là lực sĩ nổi tiếng tầm quốc gia vì đô vật là bộ môn được quần chúng Iran ưa chuộng, và về bộ môn này thì Iran ở đẳng cấp quốc tế.

Navid và các anh em ruột, cũng như cả ngàn người khác, đã tham dự các cuộc biểu tình chống chính quyền năm 2018, nên có dư luận nói vụ án này là đổ vấy cho họ để dằn mặt mọi người. Chính quyền, tòa án Iran không thông báo chi tiết cũng như nguyên nhân vụ án, chỉ xác định lơ mơ là Navid có mặt tại hiện trường vì điện thoại di động của anh được ghi nhận xuất hiện ở nơi xảy ra án mạng.

Mỹ trừng phạt một công ty Trung Quốc liên quan dự án khu du lịch tại Campuchia với cáo buộc phục vụ mục đích quân sự cũng như tham vọng “Vành đai và Con đường”.

Tờ South China Morning Post  đưa tin Bộ Tài chính Mỹ hôm 15-9 đã trừng phạt công ty Union Development Group của Trung Quốc liên quan dự án khu du lịch Dara Sakor ở Campuchia, với cáo buộc chuyển đổi phục vụ mục đích quân sự và phục vụ tham vọng “Vành đai và Con đường”.

Yesterday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced an important shift in U.S. declaratory policy on the South China Sea. This morning, Assistant Secretary of State David Stilwell elaborated further during remarks at CSIS’s annual South China Sea Conference. The press statement from Pompeo listed specific Chinese maritime claims the United States considers illegal. The statement marks a significant clarification of prior U.S. positions but not a radical break from past policy. It makes explicit things that had been implied by previous administrations. And in that it sets the stage for more effective diplomatic messaging and stronger responses to China’s harassment of its neighbors. U.S. partners and allies in the region were seemingly briefed in advance—the Philippine defense secretary, for instance, was ready with a positive statement within hours. And the new policy sparked excited, and often hyperbolic, coverage in the press and social media.

Tehran, Iran – The United States has broken with all other permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and unilaterally declared the re-imposition of all UN sanctions against Iran – a claim rejected by Iran and the international community, including Washington’s close allies, as having no legal basis.
