HÀ NỘI — Ship Fuyuzuki of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force docked at Cam Ranh International Port in the south central province of Khánh Hòa yesterday, starting a five-day visit to Việt Nam.

The crewmember will visit leaders of the provincial People’s Committee, Commander of Naval Zone 4 and ships of the Vietnam People’s Navy. They will have sport exchange with officers and soldiers of Naval Zone 4.

The visit takes place in the context that relations between the two countries in general and defence ties in particular are growing. — VNS

Japan to join US in South China Sea patrols

(CNN)Japan is planning on upping its activities in the South China Sea through joint training patrols with the United States and exercises with regional navies, Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said.

Japan would also be giving military aid to countries such as the Philippines and Vietnam as it increases its role in the contested waters of the South China Sea, Inada said Thursday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank in Washington, DC.
Inada also welcomed the US’s plan to allocate 60% of its Navy and Air Force assets to the Asia Pacific region by 2020.

As maritime nations, Vietnam and Japan need to enhance cooperation to maintain peace and stability at sea, Speaker of the Japanese House of Representatives Tadamori Oshima told Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in Tokyo on Thursday.

The leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam arrived in Japan on Tuesday for a four-day visit, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Vietnam, Japan close 6 deals during Party chief Trong’s visit

Vietnam and Japan on Tuesday discussed measures to foster their bilateral relations and signed six cooperation agreements during the visit to Tokyo by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong.

The two sides had the discussions and inched the deals during talks between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and General Secretary Trong, who arrived in Japan the same day for a four-day visit, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
