Do the Chinese who visit Vietnam, or who live in Vietnam, feel that Vietnam is similar to China?

I visited Vietnam last year. Here’s my feeling:

Yes. Put it in another way, both China and Vietnam look like what a transitional economy on the track of fast growth is supposed to be, a hybrid of new and old powered by heated business activities.

In particular, as a tourist, I feel that the way Vietnamese businessman cooperated with the travel agency tried to solicit goods was very familiar to me.

Additionally, Vietnamese police and custom stuffs reminded me of Chinese police before 1999.

The distinction is also obvious.

First, roads and streets are filled with motorbikes. Vietnamese drive motorbikes like crazy. Motorbikes are banned or restricted in most Chinese cities.

Second, red billboards with commie propaganda is everywhere. Believe it or not, that’s rare in the Chinese cities I’ve been to.

Third, Chinese custom doesn’t demand tips. Vietnamese custom officials appear as if the tips are legal.
