Will Vietnam economy pass Thailand in the next 15 years?
15 years- so near and yet so far, isn’t it? But some say 20–30 years.
Let’s get real.
Yesterday, all Thai TV viewers were made to see a piece of the news —how Vietnam’s VinFast the first lot of EV vehicles were made to line up waiting for docking on board to ship to the US… the sight that raises everyone’s eye brows.
However, it’s no surprise with Vietnam is one of the few countries to record positive economic growth during the pandemic
- Although there are completely different kinds of governments, but being an agricultural country that depends on the export, besides both are in close proximity geographically. A comparison between ‘Thai-Vietnamese’ has always been mentioned all the time.
Why Vietnam is promising as a fierce competitor to Thailand:-
Stronger law and enforcement which is quite obvious and you don’t need a genius to tell that Thailand is trailing behind.
Geographical – Although Vietnam has a dispute with China on the South China Sea issue. But Vietnam’s logistics links with China are constantly improving. Thailand is banking on a thousand of years of cordial relation with China.
Efforts to tackle corruption more seriously while Thailand is sinking in a trouble water in this respect.
Social conditions: That is to say, from 1955-1980, Vietnam has always been through many wars, thus contributing to their resilient and tolerant mindsets. Thailand, diplomatically has always been as cool as the ice in the Antarctica except hot-blooded Thais who have never ever satisfied with any government, thus far.
Education: Vietnamese school children study 3 shifts a day. They are moving vigorously to educate the young in a fast pace to catch up with the time lost. Thailand is trying hard to narrow down the gap of teaching qualities between urban kids and rural kids.
If Thailand sits back and relaxes, Vietnam’s economy doesn’t need 15 years to be on par or ahead of Thailand. Nevertheless Thais are upbeat with Thai smiles and unbeatable tourism… Sabai- sabai again (whatever will be, will be.)
